Taking the first step to growing your presence on social media can be incredibly daunting. Putting yourself out there for everyone to see is far from easy, but can help propel you and your business forward. Just like no two people are the same, no two social media profiles should be the same either. Our co-founder Tara has successfully built an audience of over 30,000 people on Instagram with a strong personal brand. Here, Tara shares her answers to some of the most common questions around personal branding and social media growth:

  • How do I get started?

This is the question we’ve been asked the most, and it’s the one that’s easiest to answer: start by identifying what’s holding you back. If it’s a lack of structure, write down what you want to achieve and think about what content you want to create that will help you get there. If you’re struggling for ideas, start following people who will give you inspiration. If it’s making time you’re battling with, add content creation slots into your diary. If it’s fear, find someone who can be a sounding board for your ideas and content. All of this and more will be covered in our CAL Social Mentorship Program.

  • What if I’m not naturally good at this?

Please don’t let that put you off. There are so many ways to exist on social media, there’s no one size fits all or ‘right way’ to do this, and contrary to what the e-books will tell you there is definitely no formula for success. Creating a personal brand or running a successful social media channel can be done in so many different ways, a lot of it is trial and error in the beginning until you find what works for you or your business. It will get easier, trust us.

  • How do I get over the fear of being more vulnerable online?

There’s not much that is scarier than opening up to family, friends and strangers online. We’ve seen this ongoing trend of people wanting to see a more personal side of the people they follow on social media, whatever niche they’re in. If you’re thinking about sharing things that seem scary, try stripping it back and taking small steps. Write out short, medium and long term goals to make sure you start slow. Over time you’ll feel more confident sharing and it will get easier.

  • How should I measure success?

Success on social media can be measured in so many different ways. When writing down your goals and what you’re looking to achieve, think about what reaction you’d like to get from your audience. If you’re looking to reach more people, look at tracking how many people share your posts with their audience. If you want to drive conversation, look at how many comments or direct messages you’re receiving.

  • How do you handle online trolling and bullies?

Having a good support network around you who lift you up and validate your ideas is important. If you’re struggling, know that there are communities that can help you, also remember to use the block function!

  • How often should I be posting to ensure high growth

Instead of focusing on quantity, focus on quality. It’s much better to post 1 engaging piece of content than it is to create 7 posts that lack purpose every week. It’s getting harder and harder to grow online, but staying up to date with new social media functionality and continually developing higher quality and more engaging content will get you there.

  • How to find your audience online?

Start by looking at the personalities or brands that you admire on social media. Who is engaging with them? Are they the sorts of people you’d like to reach too? What are their most engaged with posts? What type of content works best for them? Applying this research to your own social media will enable you to create content that they will want to see. Engaging with other thought leaders in your space and community management within the communities you’re looking to target will help you bring them over to your platform.
